Connect your inverter

RayHub shows what your solar is doing by reading your inverter. Most inverters need one setting switched on first. This page shows you how, brand by brand. You don't need to be technical.

Three things to know first

Each one takes a minute to understand. After that, the steps below are short.

  • Modbus is how your inverter shares its readings

Modbus is a way for your inverter to share its numbers with other devices on your home network. It is often switched off when the inverter is installed. RayHub needs it switched on. It only reads. It doesn't change how your solar runs.

  • The IP address is your inverter's number on your network

Every device on your home network has an address made of four numbers with dots. It looks like 192.168.1.50. RayHub needs your inverter's address to find it. The section Finding the IP address shows where to look.

  • Both need to be on the same network

RayHub joins your home WiFi. Your inverter must be connected to that same home network, by WiFi or by cable. If your inverter is on its own separate network, RayHub can't reach it.

Finding the IP address

Try these in order. Stop when you find it.

  1. Open your inverter's app on your phone.Look for a page called Network, Communication or WiFi. The IP address is often listed there.
  2. If it isn't there, open your internet router's app or settings page.Your router is the box your internet comes through. It keeps a list of connected devices. Look for a name with your inverter's brand in it.
  3. Write the address down. It looks like 192.168.1.50.
  4. Ask your router to keep that address for the inverter.Routers call this a reserved or fixed address. It stops the number changing later. If it changed, RayHub would lose the inverter. Your installer or internet provider can help with this step.

Telling RayHub where to look

You do this once, during setup on the screen or from your phone.

  1. When RayHub asks for your inverter's address, type the IP address. For example 192.168.1.50.
  2. Leave the brand on Automatic.RayHub works out which brand you have by itself.
  3. Only add a port number if your brand's steps below say so.A port is like a door number on the inverter. RayHub uses door 502 unless you say otherwise. To use another one, add a colon and the number, like 192.168.1.50:1502.

Sigenergy Verified

You can do this yourself in the mySigen app.

  1. Open the mySigen app.
  2. Tap System.
  3. Tap System Settings.
  4. Tap Modbus TCP Server Settings.
  5. Switch the Modbus TCP server on and save.
  6. Give RayHub the inverter's IP address. No port number is needed.

GoodWe Workshop tested

This brand is tested in our workshop. It has not run in a real home yet. What you do depends on how your GoodWe connects to your network.

If your inverter has a network cable, or a LAN and WiFi kit

  1. Give RayHub the inverter's IP address. No port number is needed.
  2. If nothing shows up, the inverter's Modbus TCP setting may be off.We don't have confirmed steps for this setting yet. Check your inverter's manual, or ask your solar installer to switch on Modbus TCP.

If your inverter only has a small WiFi stick plugged into it

  1. Find the WiFi stick's IP address in your router's device list.
  2. Give RayHub that address with :8899 on the end.For example 192.168.1.80:8899. This is the door GoodWe's WiFi stick uses.

Sungrow Workshop tested

This brand is tested in our workshop. It has not run in a real home yet.

We don't have confirmed menu steps for Sungrow yet.

The setting is usually called Modbus TCP. Check your inverter's manual, or ask your solar installer to switch it on.

If your inverter has its own network cable socket, use that connection. The small WiNet-S WiFi stick allows only one connection at a time, and it can drop out.

Fronius GEN24 Workshop tested

This brand is tested in our workshop. It has not run in a real home yet. These steps are for the Primo GEN24 and Symo GEN24.

Check this before you change anything

Step 5 changes how the inverter lays out its readings. Anything else that already reads your inverter would then read the wrong numbers. That could be Home Assistant, a battery system, a car charger or another monitor. If something else reads your inverter, ask your installer before you go ahead.

  1. Open the inverter's web page in a browser.Type the inverter's IP address into the address bar. Your installer may need to log in for you.
  2. Go to Communication.
  3. Go to Modbus.
  4. Switch on the Modbus TCP server.
  5. Set SunSpec Model Type to int + SF.The factory setting is float. RayHub can't read float. If it is left on float, the screen tells you to change it.
  6. Leave the meter address at 200.
  7. Leave Allow control switched off.RayHub only reads. It doesn't need control.
  8. Save.
  9. Give RayHub the inverter's IP address. If the Modbus page shows a port other than 502, add it on the end.

SolarEdge Workshop tested

This brand is tested in our workshop. It has not run in a real home yet. Our testing covers SolarEdge systems without a SolarEdge battery.

We don't have confirmed menu steps for SolarEdge yet.

The setting is usually called Modbus TCP. It is set in SolarEdge's SetApp, which normally needs your installer. Ask them to switch it on.

SolarEdge often uses door 1502. If so, give RayHub the address with :1502 on the end.

A SolarEdge inverter allows one Modbus connection at a time. If another system already uses it, RayHub can't connect.

Victron Workshop tested

This brand is tested in our workshop. It has not run in a real home yet. RayHub reads your Victron through its GX device, such as a Cerbo GX.

  1. Open the GX device's menu.Use its screen, or Remote Console in VRM.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Go to Services.
  4. Switch Modbus TCP on.It is off when the GX device is new.
  5. Give RayHub the GX device's IP address. No port number is needed.

AlphaESS Workshop tested

This brand is tested in our workshop. It has not run in a real home yet. These steps are for AlphaESS SMILE systems.

We don't have confirmed menu steps for AlphaESS yet.

The setting is usually called Modbus TCP. You may find it in the AlphaESS app under Settings, then Communication. If it isn't there, ask your solar installer to switch it on.

Give RayHub the inverter's IP address. No port number is needed.

An AlphaESS system allows one Modbus connection at a time. If another system already uses it, RayHub can't connect.

Some older AlphaESS systems have no network connection for Modbus. They need an extra adapter, so ask your installer.

Neovolt and ByteWatt systems are related to AlphaESS but work differently inside. These steps don't cover them yet.

Deye / Sunsynk Workshop tested

This brand is tested in our workshop. It has not run in a real home yet. Deye and Sunsynk are the same inverter family under two names. The single phase and three phase hybrid models are both covered by these steps.

These inverters share their data through a wired RS485 port, so they need a small gateway box to join your home network. Many solar installers already fit one for monitoring tools.

Ask your installer for an RS485 to WiFi gateway, such as the Elfin EW11. When the gateway runs in Modbus TCP mode, give RayHub the gateway's IP address. When it runs as a plain UDP link, add :8899 on the end.

The small WiFi stick that comes with many of these inverters is for the Solarman cloud app. RayHub can't read through it. Give RayHub the gateway's address, not the stick's.

If nothing answers, ask your installer to check that the inverter's Modbus address is set to 1.

Fox ESS Workshop tested

This brand is tested in our workshop. It has not run in a real home yet. These steps are for current Fox ESS hybrids, the KH, H3 Pro, H3 Smart and EVO.

Fox ESS switched off readings through the inverter's network port in newer firmware. These inverters share their data through a wired RS485 port instead, so they need a small adapter fitted near the inverter to join your home network.

Ask your installer for an RS485 to WiFi adapter, such as the Elfin EW11, set to Modbus TCP mode. Give RayHub the adapter's IP address. No port number is needed.

The WiFi stick that sends your data to the Fox ESS app is a separate part. RayHub reads through the adapter, so give RayHub the adapter's address and not the stick's.

If nothing answers, ask your installer to check that the inverter's RS485 device ID is set to 247.

Older Fox ESS models such as the H1 work differently inside. These steps don't cover them yet.

If you have a Fox ESS system and would like to help us test, choose Fox ESS when you register.

SolaX Workshop tested

This brand is tested in our workshop. It has not run in a real home yet. These steps are for SolaX X1 and X3 Hybrid inverters from Gen2 and Gen3, which have a network port built in.

We don't have confirmed menu steps for SolaX yet.

Connect the inverter's own network port to your home network with a cable. Give RayHub the inverter's IP address. No port number is needed.

The Pocket WiFi dongle that sends your data to the SolaX app is a separate part. Recent firmware updates for some of these dongles turn off the local readings RayHub uses, so give RayHub the inverter's address and not the dongle's.

SolaX Hybrid Gen4 inverters have no network port for this. That includes the Qcells Q.VOLT, which is a Gen4 SolaX under another name. They need an RS485 adapter, and these steps don't cover them yet. Newer SolaX models aren't covered yet either.

If nothing answers, ask your installer to check the inverter's Modbus address. It is usually 1.

If you have a SolaX system and would like to help us test, choose SolaX when you register.

Solis Workshop tested

This brand is tested in our workshop. It has not run in a real home yet. These steps are for Solis hybrid inverters that run a battery, such as the S6-EH1P and S6-EH3P.

We don't have confirmed menu steps for Solis yet.

The logger stick plugged into your inverter decides whether RayHub can read through it. Some sticks, such as the S2-WL-ST, can share readings on your home network once Solis support has updated them. Others only talk to the Solis cloud app.

Recent firmware updates for some Solis logger sticks turn off these local readings. The Solis app keeps working, so the change is easy to miss.

The dependable route is an RS485 to WiFi adapter, such as the Elfin EW11, set to Modbus TCP mode and wired to the inverter's RS485 port. Ask your installer for one. Give RayHub the adapter's IP address. No port number is needed.

A Solis logger stick allows one Modbus connection at a time. If another system already uses it, RayHub can't connect.

If nothing answers, ask your installer to check that the inverter's Modbus address is set to 1.

Solis inverters without a battery work differently inside. These steps don't cover them yet.

If you have a Solis system and would like to help us test, choose Solis when you register.

SMA Workshop tested

This brand is tested in our workshop. It has not run in a real home yet. These steps are for SMA Sunny Boy and Sunny Tripower inverters, and the Sunny Tripower Smart Energy with its battery.

We don't have confirmed menu steps for SMA yet.

The setting is in the inverter's own web page. Your installer signs in as Installer and switches on the Modbus TCP server. Give RayHub the inverter's IP address. No port number is needed.

On SMA inverters RayHub updates your numbers every 10 seconds. SMA asks for this gap to keep the inverter running smoothly.

Grid readings need an SMA Energy Meter connected to your inverter.

Resetting the inverter to its factory settings switches Modbus off again. If your numbers stop after a reset, ask your installer to switch it back on.

If you have an SMA system and would like to help us test, choose SMA when you register.

Growatt Workshop tested

This brand is tested in our workshop. It has not run in a real home yet. These steps are for Growatt MIN XH and MOD XH hybrid inverters.

We don't have confirmed menu steps for Growatt yet.

Most Growatt WiFi sticks only talk to the Growatt cloud app, so RayHub can't read through them. The ShineWiLan-X2 stick is the one that can. Check its label for X2 at the end of the name. Give RayHub the stick's IP address. No port number is needed.

If your stick isn't an X2, or readings through it drop out, ask your installer for an RS485 to WiFi adapter, such as the Elfin EW11, set to Modbus TCP mode. Give RayHub the adapter's IP address. No port number is needed.

If nothing answers, ask your installer to check that the inverter's Modbus address is set to 1.

The second generation MIN TL-XH2 and the SPH and SPA models work differently inside. These steps don't cover them yet.

Growatt SPF off-grid inverters aren't covered. Please don't connect RayHub to one.

If you have a Growatt hybrid and would like to help us test, choose Growatt when you register.

If the hub can't find it

  1. Check the IP address against your router's list.
  2. Check the Modbus setting is still switched on.
  3. Check the inverter and RayHub are on the same home network.
  4. Ask your solar installer.Show them this page. It is usually a couple of minutes' work for them.
